Dropping out of college is a huge decision. Once can feel hopeless and unsure of what to do after leaving college. It can be easy to move back home and spiral into a hole of dependence. The transition from college to home can leave you asking yourself “I dropped out of college, now what?”. Knowing what you want to do with the rest of your life at such a young age is asking quite a lot. The good news? It’s okay not to know.
Rest assured knowing there are many options for you after leaving college. Talk with others. Explore your options. Consider the pros and cons. Try things that spark your interest. Here is a list of some places you could start after leaving college:
- Volunteer. This suggestion can be performed in many different capacities. One way you can engage in volunteering could be by joining a volunteer service corps organization. This experience can replace a lot of the learning endeavors one may get from college. Or you can volunteer in a more generalized approach. Research the various ways in which you can get plugged into your community. Go after something you are passionate about. This could help you discover your long-term goals.
- Find a job. Whether it be full-time or part-time, getting a job after leaving college could be a good way to occupy time. This is also a good way to get on your feet financially and work towards building independence. Check local job ads and explore things that you think you would enjoy.
- Keep learning. Just because you leave college does not mean learning opportunities end. You should take advantage of opportunities to learn new skills or adopt new hobbies. Photography, cooking, graphic design, art, foreign languages, or music are some suggestions of things you might consider.
- Other colleges? Maybe the college you attended contributed to your unhappiness. If you realize this, consider looking into other colleges. If you were at a four-year university, maybe starting at a two-year university is a better idea. Weigh your options and consider the pros and cons.
- List your long-term goals. Any goals that you have, write them down. Talk with friends and family about the best plan to achieve those goals. Setting goals is a great way to hold yourself accountable for getting where you want to go in life.
- Join a program. Therapeutic programs are a great option to consider. These types of programs can be extremely beneficial in helping you get on your way to adulthood.
