Mental Health Resources: Finding Support
December 22, 2020If you are struggling with a mental health issue as a young adult, the symptoms you are experiencing can be compounded if you don’t have access to support networks and resources that can help you through these challenging times.
Resources for young adults struggling with mental health issues
Mental health conditions are becoming increasingly common in young people with 50% of all conditions developing by age 14 and 75% by age 24. While researchers still aren’t sure what all the reasons for developing these conditions are, they have confirmed that individuals have the power to improve their mental health conditions. This process can start with a single conversation. Starting a dialogue with a trusted friend, colleague, parent, significant other, or mental health professional can help you to identify what you are struggling with and how to get help.
Many individuals who are struggling with a mental health condition find it helpful to join a support group. These groups are spaces where individuals struggling with similar conditions come together to share their stories and experiences. Support groups can help reduce the loneliness and isolation you may be feeling, and help you to realize there are other people struggling with the same thing you are. Support groups are often focused on specific topics such as anxiety, loss, or depression, so take the time to find the right one for you. If working through your mental health conditions alone rather than in a group setting is better for you, you could consider trying one of the many ADAA approved mental health apps that are available. Apps can help make therapy more accessible, efficient, and portable, so you can get support wherever you are. You can find a myriad of apps that have been proven to help alleviate mental health symptoms from anxiety to depression to mood disorders. Check out this list of ADAA approved apps.
