Social Media Madness: Facebook Addiction in Young AdultsJune 19, 2019
Social media is growing to become more and more consuming. With new platforms and more features—young people are tempted now more than ever to become part of the social media world. So much so that unplugging for even a short period of time can feel almost impossible. The word “addiction” has even been tied to social media platforms such as a Facebook addiction. Yes, it’s a thing. New studies show how and why addictions to such platforms can develop. Social media can serve as a great source of comfort during stressful times. However, it can also grow into a source of dependence if the individuals stress isn’t acknowledged offline by other support sources. When researchers conducted a study of students, they found that the higher the stress level, the deeper the engagement with Facebook.
Addictive behaviors may be present when:
- Users spend more and more time on Facebook
- Users are preoccupied with Facebook all the time and feel uneasy when they can’t engage with the network online
Other Stress Relievers
The answer to preventing the development of a Facebook or social media addiction is to find other ways to cope with stress. Turning to social media is not the healthiest option. If your teen is struggling to get away from the phone, encourage them to engage in other activities to cope with stress. Good ways to ensure stress is being managed in a healthy way is to address the following:
- Eat a healthy diet. Make sure to get enough fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Get enough sleep (at least eight hours).
- Socialize, talk to your friends, participate in activities.
- Do not use drugs, alcohol, or nicotine.
- Avoid excessive sugar and caffeine (which can make you crash and experience mood swings).
Creating healthy ways to deal with stress will leave one less likely to turn to social media for comfort. If your young adult is stressed talk to them about a plan of self-care and help get them the support they need if necessary.
