Why Should I Learn About Politics?February 1, 2021
During a time when our country’s political landscape feels more like a battlefield than a true democracy, choosing to avoid politics altogether may seem like the easy and right choice for you. For decades, youth and young adults have not felt included or taken seriously in the political realm, which points to another reason why it’s easy to disengage. Despite these challenges, there are many reasons to increase your awareness of politics regardless of your political beliefs.
Why you should be aware of politics regardless of your political party
Whether you identify as a democrat, a republican, a libertarian, or an independent, there are many reasons why increasing your awareness in politics can be beneficial to your life. The first reason is that the government and politics do impact nearly every aspect of our lives. From the amount of taxes we pay to our rights and liberties as citizens, our elected officials impact the way we live our daily lives. Gaining an understanding of the way laws and the legislative process work can help you determine the best course of action for engaging in politics both locally and on a national level.
Gaining knowledge about politics also helps you to become an informed voter. It’s been widely reported that young voters are vastly underrepresented at the polls, but this population could make a major difference in voting outcomes if they show up to vote and are armed with the facts. If you do your own independent research, rather than trusting the Facebook rantings of distant relatives, you can equip yourself with the peace of mind that you are voting for your interests based on facts.
The ease of which political information is now available and accessible to all is another reason to engage with politics. Political information is now embedded in platforms that we use every day such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube. This online political climate allows young voters to receive a fuller picture of all candidates, platforms, and ideologies than ever before. It is worth noting that not all online information is considered equal quality, so take in this information with a critical eye, looking for signs of credibility and trustworthiness.
Lastly, while you might not care about the political landscape right now, it’s probable that many of these issues will matter to you as you continue into adulthood. Issues such as struggling with college debt, finding a full-time job after graduation, mortgage rates, health insurance, or starting your own business can make politics suddenly very relevant to you. Because these issues will become pertinent in your life, it’s important to have background knowledge of politics so you can protect your interests moving forward.
